Spiritual Counseling

Do You Struggle With Your Faith—Or Wish To Harness Its Healing Potential?

Are you unsure what to think about God or your idea of a Higher Power anymore? Were you raised in a strict religious environment according to values and principles that no longer align with your experiences or beliefs?

Do you generally feel content in your relationship with God yet seek a way to integrate your faith into a traditional counseling setting?

Perhaps you’ve been hurt by people of your faith—whether parents, other Christians, or even leadership. As a result, maybe you feel angry or resentful toward God—or worse, you worry that God is angry with you.

Being Spiritually Disconnected Can Wear At You Daily…

You may be stressing out and suffering in subtle ways that interfere with your job, relationships, and personal life. Underlying frustration or hopelessness is probably making it difficult to sleep well or function at your best.

You may be disconnected from your family, the clergy, or anyone else you previously had a spiritual connection with. Some days, you likely feel alone—even abandoned—as if God is no longer there for you anymore. Or maybe you don’t even want that presence in your life because it feels like God let you down in your hour of greatest need.

I understand that reconciling your faith with feelings of disappointment or uncertainty can be difficult, but there is hope. Through our work together, I believe you can feel better about yourself, find peace with what you believe, and successfully integrate your faith into your life.

Many People Struggle To Harmonize Their Faith With Personal Beliefs

When it comes to religion and scrutinizing what you believe in, it’s only natural that you would experience some internal conflict. And if you were raised according to a rigid or restrictive religious tradition, you are almost certain to re-examine what you believe as an adult.

I don’t know any mature Christian who hasn’t gone through a dark night of the soul that’s left them second-guessing what they believe. So if you feel alone, rest assured you are not.

The truth is, at times, religious traditions and how they’re practiced, their adherents, and leadership can all wield more power and influence over a person than they should. For example, “groupthink,” a common phenomenon among families and congregations, often stifles individuality by discouraging people from genuinely exploring their faith with honesty.

They’re Either Persuaded To Live A Life That’s Incongruent With Who They Are…

Or they’re told they’ll go to Hell if they don’t conform to the group’s standards and expectations. This exposure to the same people and their biases makes it difficult for individuals to do what is best for themselves. Instead, they are told to “tough it out” or “get over” whatever it was that challenged their faith.

As a result, many people are afraid to examine their beliefs for fear they’ll be ostracized—or that they’ll get zapped by a lightning bolt from God! That kind of fear doesn’t leave much room for spiritual reflection.

That’s why I’m here: to give you license to say what’s really on your mind in an environment in which you feel safe and free of judgment and bias.

Spiritual Counseling Gives You Permission Love And Accept Yourself

Whenever you acknowledge and give voice to hidden feelings and burdensome thoughts, you rob them of the power to influence and torment you.

Giving those parts of yourself room to breathe and exploring them with an open heart—that’s what spiritual counseling is all about. It gives you permission to speak honestly about your pain—and even voice your anger toward God if need be—without the fear of judgment or condemnation. There is a long spiritual tradition of people voicing their anger and frustration at God.

Working with a spiritually informed counselor can help you integrate your faith into your life while strengthening your connection to God. And it enables you to process trauma and use your faith to heal so memories of toxic religious experiences no longer bog you down.

As you examine your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, you’ll begin to develop a greater sense of peace and self-awareness. You’ll learn how to identify the spiritual and theological convictions that serve you well while letting go of unsupportive beliefs.

And at the end of the day, you’ll be able to take the insight and sense of peace you gain from our work together and share that compassion and understanding through your interactions with others.

A Little About My Spiritual Counseling Services And How I Approach Psychotherapy

First and foremost, I meet every individual with unconditional positive regard, meaning that I am here for you—and only you. Whatever your needs are, we’ll collaborate to find a creative treatment strategy that speaks to who you are and what you need. I also use a range of fun, eclectic strategies that focus on healing the whole self—mind, body, and spirit.

Although I consider myself a solution-oriented therapist, therapy can look a little different when it comes to counseling Christians—or anyone else on a spiritual journey. Traditional psychotherapy focuses on finding solutions for overcoming certain mental health issues.

Spiritual counseling, in contrast, is more about examining beliefs, exploring problems, increasing insight, and cultivating self-compassion through that understanding. So we’re still identifying core issues, processing trauma, and tailoring coping strategies—we’re just going about it differently.

To that end, I often draw from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) while integrating mindfulness, somatic techniques, and energy psychology protocols into the therapeutic process. Each of these elements helps clients process trauma, regulate the nervous system, and promote self-acceptance.

My Passion Is Helping People Strengthen Their Connection To The Life They Want

So whether you are struggling with aspects of being a Christian or just looking to integrate your faith into therapy, I want to help.

I know that you may be afraid to take that first step, but every fear, every doubt, every setback, and disappointment can be examined with an open heart. In doing so, you can find peace in who you are and what you believe, ultimately leading you to a sense of enduring joy and contentment.

Perhaps You’re Considering Therapy For Christians, But You Still Have Some Concerns...

I’m worried about the cost, especially if I have to commit to spiritual counseling for longer than a few weeks.

Working with a spiritually aware psychotherapist does require a certain investment of time, money, and energy. But the rewards are invaluable. After all, how much is it worth to you to feel at peace when it comes to your relationship with God or your Higher Power?

The truth is that cultivating self-acceptance and an openhearted understanding of your life—with all its twists and turns—is worth more than anything you could ever commit to.

I worry you’ll try to convert me or tell me what not to believe.

That’s a very understandable concern; who wants to be told what to believe or think? As a spiritually informed counselor, I’m not here to judge, condemn, or influence what you believe. Rather, my job is to provide impartial support for fleshing out what you think, what you believe, and how you want to live. My only agenda involves helping you live in accordance with your own values.

I am so afraid of what my family and faith community will think if they know I’m seeing a psychotherapist.

I completely understand how scary it can feel to reach out for help—but you are not alone in this. Together, we can explore your journey as a Christian or as someone who is deconstructing their faith and address any negative religious or spiritual experiences that motivate you to seek therapy.

We can also collaborate on developing skills for regulating emotions, communicating effectively, and strengthening family relationships and other social networks. That way, you have a support system in and outside of our sessions.

That said, at the end of the day, your spiritual journey is between you and your Higher Power, however you see and experience it—no one else.
